Bluffing

"Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me." T.S. Eliot
Deception is an element of poker. To bluff is the trickery in poker. As you may already know, a bluff deceives other players in making them think you're hand is better than theirs when it isn't. For a bluff to work, other players have to think you're hand is better than their's. Typically, beginning poker players adore this idea of bluffing and often misuse it.

Value of the Bluff

Bluff value increases under certain generalized situations that usually have much to do with the info you assume about the other players. These assumptions can make it difficult to give definitive reasons or places to bluff. Below are some less generalized times to bluff and some helpful advice.

Typical Reasons to Bluff

Some typical reasons to bluff...

1. When a few players are in the pot. Basically, tricking a couple of people is easier than tricking a crowd. Chances are better that noone has made a good hand. Many players won't believe you, so they will stay in just to "keep you honest". You need a persistent bluff over a period of 1 or 3 betting rounds, which can be costly if they don't fall for the bluff. Knowing the players is essential before you use this bluff type.

2. Playing with fairly tight players. Players that fold easily are the biggest bluff targets. Bets are just a form of information gathering on the timid player's hand. Be careful when you bluff early against a very tight player and they don't fold, think twice about bluffing again in future rounds because they have something. You have to figure out if they have a drawing or made hand.

3. On the river. When it is apparent that made hands are missed, the time to bluff is now! Usually it's a good idea to bluff with weak hands like an ace-high or lowest pair, because some players will stay only because of pot odds.

4. Late position and everyone else has checked. Bluffing this way will most likely force players out, but not all. This is a fairly common bluff. Many players will stay only because of bet odds or to "keep you honest". Be persistent over a couple betting rounds wth this kind of bluff.

5. Betting pre-flop and missed. Others don't know you missed! This move can be dangerous, and evaluating the board is essential before you do this.

6. The other players have "the fear". This depends on how other players look at you. Winning a hand through good play and the others who say "nice hand" are those who now have your respect. These people will more likely fold to your bluffing if played right. Play the hand exactly the same as the other winning hand. Making others think.... "oh now, here we go again!"

7. When "flop" ain't so great. Some players fold immediately if all they have is an overcard. When there is a rainbow flop of 3, 7, 10, many players will not have much. Bluffing here can go horribly wrong especially if you have people that love keeping "junk hands". Once again, know your players.

8. Pre-flop on button, and everyone else folds. Best used with tight players left of you. This can change from a bluff to a very good hand with luck and the right flop.

9. When pair is on board. Especially useful when pair is 88 or lower. Chances are these cards have been folded or are still in the deck. You want to evaluate the hand very carefully if they do call. Also, this situation is nice because you can read the tells of the players NOT involved. It's easier giving away the fact that you HAD a card than actually HAVING it.

These are fairly common reasons to bluff. Many know the reasons. To summarize, know your players and don't bluff to the point that eveyone knows you are bluffing.
