Texas Holdem Poker Strategies - Position
The position is where you sit in relation to the dealer at the table. The most advantageous position is the Dealer because he/she gets to see how every player at the table reacts before making their move. When you are left of the small blind you are in the big blind and have already been obligated to the game and is in another early position.
The person left of the BB(big blind) will act first before the flop is dealt: Also known as "being under the gun". Game play is clockwise and allows those who are in late position to be at an advantage. So, folks in late position can play weaker hands or "gambling hands" with less fear of financial loss.
When in the blind positions and when under the gun (early positions), players should be more selective with their hands since they don't get to watch other players betting/raising before deciding if they want to stay for that hand.
For instance, say you're under the gun (first to act). You have Queen-King in the pocket, unsuited. The player to your left raises, and everyone folds except you.... Now you're in a crunch. Chances are this player has a better hand than you, with at least an ace or a pocket pair. But you've already bet and you have no way to tell what other players have in the pocket.
Furthermore, you will always be acting before this player. This positional advantage continues throughout this hand.
Being in the dealers position not only gives you the benefits of observing how others are betting, but you also have the ability to adjust the size of the pot. Assuming noone folds, a raise by the player in the dealers position could double the pot size. When players have committed to one bet, its easier to commit to a second or a third or fourth....etc
